PrestaShop is an open source CMS used to build e-commerce sites. It was born in 2007 and, unlike the more "generic" CMS popular at the time of its first release, PrestaShop is entirely designed for the development and management of e-commerce.

There are multiple alternatives to prestashop. I have personally tested OpenCart and if you wonder which one i prefer, i can tell you it is prestashop.

When you research the difference between the two, you will see many comments about the simplicity of OpenCart and that PrestaShop all the modules must be purchased. If you are starting a new store and you are on low budget, you need to consider all that. I still advice to go with PrestaShop because it is simpler. Too many customizations are required on OpenCart and you may need a developper to continue. It is true a lot of modules are paid on Prestashop but you get to do almost everything without needing to customize.
