Joomla is focusing on modern web development trends, ensuring it remains competitive in an increasingly crowded market.

Joomla will not reclaim its former mass-market dominance (e.g., competing with WordPress) but will continue as a niche CMS for specific use cases due to its structured content management, built-in features, and open-source nature. Its survival is tied to continued development, an active community, adaptation to modern trends, and robust security. This aligns with current observations of Joomla’s market position and trajectory, as evidenced by various sources from 2023–2025.Joomla, launched in 2005, has powered millions of websites, including high-profile ones like those of the United Nations and Harvard University. However, its market share has declined compared to WordPress, which dominates with over 40% of the web, while Joomla holds a smaller share, often cited as the fourth most-used CMS. Despite this, Joomla remains relevant for specific niches due to its flexibility, multilingual support, and robust framework, which cater to complex websites like government portals, e-commerce platforms, and educational sites. The claim’s assertion of a “reduced and specialized role” is supported by Joomla’s current usage patterns and its focus on structured content management, which differentiates it from simpler platforms like WordPress or no-code solutions like Wix.

Joomla is good for website builders and developers. Word press is good if someone wants to make website without professional support.

I love joomla, too. I am using it for many years. Some template and extension providers have run out of bussiness and that's sad and worryies me, but I think joomla will survive.

Joomla is now become better with Joomla 4 and 5. Version 6 will be releasing this year with much cleaned up code.

Joomla's a bit more tricky to handle than WordPress, its eternal rival, but it's way more flexible. With Joomla, one extension can totally transform your site into an app. WordPress has tons of plugins, but they can't match Joomla's level of customization. Sure, WooCommerce's a beast, but other WordPress extensions can't keep up with Joomla. My take? For a simple, quick site, go WordPress. For a serious, customizable web project, Joomla's the way to go.

Joomla will only die if a better alternative emerges.
Something that is possible.

In any case, I think there's still a pending evolution, which is to evolve the way we create websites more focused on mobile devices and tablets (not only a redesign)

If a CMS emerges that revolutionizes this, it could mean the end of Joomla and WordPress.
