I did it on an old joomla 1.5 progressively while I was having many problems directly.
My way of upgrading after reading many posts :
1.5 -->1.7
1.7 --> 2.5
2.5 --> 3.2
3.2 --> 3.9
Stopped here at this time

Thanks, i'll try.
Can you explain to me better, 3 point ?
He means to format the excel so your headings are menu, category, article etc.

I spent a few weeks trying to migrate 1.5 to 4 but I had so many problems because of the advancement of Joomla's structure from 2.5 onwards. I also found that I had problems within the tables in 1.5 and those problems migrated to 2.5.
Eventually, because of the internal problems and the 1.5 extensions weren't compatible I found it easier to make a new folder in the root of the 1.5 website (I called it "site") and installed Joomla 4 in there and used JCE Pro and copied and pasted the content on each page into JCE.
Once finished I deleted the old website and moved the files inside "site' to the root, edited the config file and all went well, took about 4 days (spending about 4hrs a day on it)
The real benefit was that I didn't need many of the old extensions and the site looks new and also doesn't have the previous problems.

In my opinion, it's much easier to install Joomla 4 and copy all materials and settings from Joomla 1.5 ;)

It's quite a russian roulette
I don't think that most of the extensions / plugins / templates installed in Joomla 1.5 are supported in Joomla 4 :)
