Once CI was most popular framework and it has its own advantages but nowadays LARAVEL is in demand. Slowly slowly CI is dying and its marketshare is reducing.
Do you know almost 30% Laravel code is Symfony? Symfony is the most up to date framework. Yeh its bit hard to undestand and difficult for newbie that is different thing.

Yes, I know, but I can make the same applications with Laravel much easier, just using YAML files is a pain vs using pure PHP files for configuration, etc...
CI is dead, i prefer laravel.
Every framework has its own advantages and disadvantages.
Check with them your purpose and useability you wanted to use.

Both frameworks are good but without any doubt Laravel is better for me.
If you are initiating in PHP codeigniter is more easy to understand but if you already code in PHP I think laravel is more complet.

CodeIgniter is not dead, there is an up-to-date version v4.x (PHP 7 / PSR / PHPUnit, etc.) - https://codeigniter.com

Unlike Laravel, CI has all its own components, there is no "vendor" folder. It's lighter, and you can just download it in a zip archive without composer.
